Submissions are reviewed by the Heritage and Culture Group composed of area volunteers, the curator, and the CAO of the Municipality. Most exhibitions are seven weeks in duration and can be solos, duos, or group shows. Shows that have a theme, are a retrospective, a “story” to tell, or are collaborative exhibits are an asset. We hold approximately five exhibitions each year and are normally booked two years in advance. In order to exhibit at the gallery artists must have a membership with the gallery; the cost for this is $10 per participating artist which is good for one year expiring November 1 of the exhibition year. We also ask the participating artist(s) to purchase some food for the opening reception, however the gallery will supply the drinks and utensils as well as all flyer printing, installation (if necessary), vinyl and advertising costs. If any works are sold during the exhibit, the gallery will retain 25% commission before HST. The gallery does not pay artists fees.
We welcome submissions from both emerging and established artists and groups of artists; it is not necessary to have exhibited your work previously to be eligible for an exhibition at the Alex Dufresne Gallery. If you have a show idea but are unsure of how to fully execute the exhibition, you are welcome to discuss your idea with the curator. The more creative the better! Involving other artists, media styles, organizations, and fields of study are encouraged. Do you think that workshops or artist talks could be part of your exhibit? Do you want to involve historical artefacts? How about video or mixed media? Include it in the proposal! While we cannot apply for grants to assist with costs of the show, we will supply letters of support on behalf of the artists applying for assistance upon request.
