Proposed Updates to the Source Protection Plan & Assessment Report

Posted Jan 29, 2026

The North Bay–Mattawa Source Protection Committee is updating the region’s Source Protection Plan and Assessment Report—the documents that help protect municipal drinking water sources. These updates are required under Ontario’s Clean Water Act, 2006 and new provincial Technical Rules released in 2021.

What’s Changing?

The updated documents include:

  • New and improved technical data, including updated watershed monitoring information.
  • Revised maps for Intake Protection Zones (IPZs), based on updated wetland and watercourse mapping.
  • Updated terminology and threat categories, reflecting the latest provincial rules.
  • New and updated policies that guide how specific activities—such as fuel storage, pesticide use, sewage works, road salt application, and nutrient management—are managed to protect drinking water.
  • A revised boundary for the Callander IPZ–Issue Contributing Area (ICA), which may mean some additional residents are included in the on‑site sewage system mandatory inspection program.

Why These Updates Matter

These changes ensure that drinking water protection policies remain effective and up to date with current science and provincial standards. They help manage or prevent activities that could impact the safety of municipal drinking water.
