Flood Warning Update

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) has issued a Watershed Conditions Statement – Flood Outlook for parts of the North Bay District. This notice is in effect until Tuesday, May 12, 2026 at 4:00 p.m.

A Flood Warning remains in effect for the following areas:

  • Lake Nipissing shoreline (including Callander and North Bay)
  • La Vase River (downstream of Lakeshore Drive)
  • Parks Creek
  • Mattawa River (downstream of Hurdman Dam)

What this means

Flooding is already happening or could happen soon. Residents and municipalities should take action if needed. This could include road closures or evacuations in affected areas.

Current Conditions

  • Water levels on Lake Nipissing are higher than normal and are about 14 cm above the level where flooding can begin.
  • High lake levels are affecting nearby rivers and creeks, including La Vase River and Parks Creek.
  • Water levels on the Mattawa River have started to go down, but remain above flood levels.
  • Some conservation areas and parks remain closed due to flooding or safety concerns.

Weather and Forecast

  • About 15–20 mm of rain is expected over the next 5 days, mainly on Saturday.
  • Lake Nipissing water levels are expected to stay mostly stable, but:
    • Wind can push water toward shorelines, especially in Callander Bay
    • Levels could rise again with more rain

Flood Risk

  • Shoreline flooding and wave action may cause erosion or damage, especially with strong winds.
  • Soils are already saturated, so additional rain could quickly increase water levels.
  • Local rivers and creeks may respond quickly to changing conditions.

Safety Tips

  • Stay away from rivers, creeks, and shorelines—banks are slippery and water is fast-moving and cold.
  • Keep children and pets away from the water.
  • Watch for flooded roads and areas.
  • Follow directions from your municipality and emergency services.

Important Notes

  • Some parks and conservation areas are closed due to flooding.
  • Municipal crews are monitoring infrastructure like culverts and bridges.
  • Conditions may change quickly depending on rainfall and wind.

Next Update

This warning will remain in effect until May 12, 2026, unless updated earlier.
