Sustainability Committee

Callander's Sustainable Community Committee has been active since the beginning of 2007 after being appointed by Callander Town Council. The Committee works in an advisory capacity to Council according to its Terms of Reference, also provided by Council. In general, the SCC advices Council about efforts to encourage sustainable and healthy living in our community.

Since the environmental commissioner for Ontario has confirmed that Climate Change is upon us and other experts are calling 2006 the year of peak oil, problems associated with climate change and increasing oil prices can no longer be ignored. Communities of all sizes must begin to prepare for tomorrow, today.

Till now, the primary concern of this committee has been with maintaining a clean water supply for the town.  But we have also had the relocalization of energy and food supplies, the health of local soils and the proper disposal of the town’s waste on our “radar”.

Today, sustainability for a small community like Callander means promoting enjoyable living, while discouraging those practices that adversely affect and/or destroy life support systems in the our natural environment. The SCC is composed of several volunteers who are committed to that objective.

The SCC shares information and promotes education with and for our neighbours through public information meetings held, on average, two times per year. In May 2012, the SCC will collaborate with North Bay’s Transition Town group, the Bay’s Locavores, and other local growing interests to host another informative event on Growing and Buying Local. Once plans are confirmed, this page will be updated.
